Istanbul, known in antiquity as Byzantium and Constantinople, with over 1.5 milion inhabitants is the most populous city in Turkey, located on the Bosphorus Strait and is the only intercontinental city in the world, extending over both the European and the Asian bank of the Bosphorus Strait. Its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
