Description - Modern Jerico, a city of the West Bank (district of al-Quds), located near the Jordan River, with a population of about 19,000 inhabitants; at -240 m s.l.m. in the Dead Sea depression, is surrounded by a fertile area surrounded by the Judah desert.

At least three separate settlements have existed near the present location for more than 11,000 years. It is the lowest permanently inhabited site on Earth, and dating done by scholars on the ruins found leads to the assumption that Jericho is the oldest city in the world after Damascus.
