First Pass under Heaven, Shanhaiguan Pass, Hebei Province, China

Description - In the picture the east gate surmounted by the Zhendong Tower. Shanhaiguan is a town in Hebei Province, bordered by the Bohai Sea to the southeast and the Yanshan Mountain to the northwest. The northern area of the town wall was once part of the defensive system of the Great Wall. At top of the tower is visible a board with five Chinese characters inscribed during the Ming Dynasty 'tian xia di yi guan' meaning "the First Pass under Heaven".
